The Colonial Period (1620-1780)
Religion:
The Colonial Period was a very unique period of Massachusetts' long history. During the colonial period, strong beliefs of the Christian religion were followed. Eight out of the thirteen original colonies had official Christian churches. Any colonists who did not believe in their states religion would be persecuted. At first, Anglicanism and Congregationalism were the main branches. Later on, the Protestant wing of Christianity gave birth to the Baptists, Methodists, Quakers, and Unitarians. There were many different branches of Christianity that were followed.
Politics and Theocracy:
Theocracy is a form of government in which rule is directed by the religious belief of that certain area. With the theocratic government in New England, anyone who followed different ideas was seen as different or insane. This is where the Salem Witch Trials start to play in. Any person partaking in witchcraft, or the use of alleged supernatural or magical powers and spells, were seen as crazy. These people were tried and persecuted. This took place between February 1692 and May 1693.
